Ghana Business Diary: Reflect Ghana (Part 1)

How The Hair Clipper Shaped A Life

Turning GHC1 into GHC1.50 or even GHC2.00 repeatedly is an act that requires a lot of tact and maybe even some talent. The more complicated the country gets, the more people want to test if they have the tact and talent required to sell a product or service. When 1957AD spoke to Godwin, popularly known as Degree Barber, his larger than life persona and cheerful nature was not all we fell in love with. His power to easily wield both staffs of talent and tact was even more fascinating, and it is very evident in the growth and success of his business, Reflect Ghana

degree barber-reflect-ghana-1957ad

“Starting out was not easy,“ he tells us. “It was me basically trying to survive. I was faced with financial constraints, which triggered my decision to study barbering during my senior high school days.“ “I am the fourth child of five to a single parent, and it did not look like I was going to get my basic needs on a silver platter since I had to share my dad’s limited resources with my other siblings, so I needed to face my problems like a man.“ He continues, “I had a plan too; my school dad in high school was the go-to person for haircuts, and he was making good money, so I understudied him.“ “I envied my school dad a bit.“ He quickly interjects, “Not envy in the way that makes you want to bring others down, that’s wrong,  but in a way that propels an individual to also do more. Thus, I started thinking of taking over from him when he graduates. I wanted to be named after him. It was the only way to leapfrog all my financial problems.“ In times when social media has conditioned young people to believe in ‘pay me first before I move‘ and have lost the value of servitude, Degree Barber highlights how that singular act set him up with a life skill. “The plan was to secretly study him whilst I run errands pertaining to his barber supplies and also performing housekeeping activities for him.“ A smile creeps across his face as he continues, “Constant practise on my friends, and a serious dedication helped me realise my dream, and when he left, I became the top dog.“

With a whiff of success, Godwin makes good of his new reputation and leverages on it. “Not before long, I was cutting the hair of my seniors and teachers. I went from a poor boy who couldn’t afford provisions for a month to the guy who could easily take five friends to the cafeteria and bear all the costs. Now I could buy textbooks and  pay my fees for extra tuition.“ And of course, as a young man coming into money, he bought good sneakers and clothes. “I left senior high school with some good money, and that left my dad in awe.“ However, it was not all rosy after that; with one goal achieved, he had other plans, and he had to achieve them.

“A full year after finishing high school, I worked as a professional barber to save some money to further my education at the University of Professional Studies, Accra. With a clipper and admission letter, I started reading business administration.“  With the pursuit of a four-year undergraduate degree, he quickly captured the student market and just like in high school, he was the person to go-to for the perfect look. But haircut money was not cutting it for his next big idea. “One of the biggest problems when starting up a business in Ghana is finance, and I had a bigger dream, my own business. I invested the money I made from barbering into the retail of sneakers and mobile phones, and that paid off and gave me enough capital to start Reflect Ghana.“

degree barber-1957ad- photo-1

The goal to start Reflect Ghana did not come up one day; Godwin speaks about growth in business passionately. “Growth is essential to the full realisation of every dream. Growth requires space, and allowing yourself to grow over time gives you the steady progress to keep you going. In my case, I realised that I needed to graduate from being a one-man-army to owning a system that works in my absence; that is the real key to financial freedom.“ As a young man with enough money, he cared for his basic needs, satisfied his wants, and extended financial support to others from his one-man-army. The thought crossed his mind of how much more he would be able to achieve if he owned a barrack with many soldiers, in this case, a salon with hair specialists. “As a business administration student, I learnt from class that entrepreneurship involves identifying and making use of every opportunity that comes your way, taking calculated risks and being innovative. Doing things that barely exist or even already exist, but uniquely.“ Armed with the knowledge from school that taught him to differentiate his services, he was moved by a famous quote. “They say dreams do not work unless you do.“ “Well, I wanted my dream to work, so I started doing. The first step was to create an online presence, then I scouted for a good space, paid the rent and started running a brick and mortar business a few months later.“

With the location set up, he had to recruit and that he did. “Like every corporate firm, my team and I advertised for vacant positions for Reflect Ghana and applicants were required to send their resumes to the company email.“ Highlighting a rigorous selection process, he finally got the best people. Staff who will produce the quality that his clients have become accustomed to.

Ghana Business Diary: Reflect Ghana (Part 2)

How The Hair Clipper Shaped A Life

This is the second part of a conversation between 1957AD & Degree Barber.

Link to the first part: Part 1

With business in Ghana not being the easiest to navigate,1957AD asked Degree Barber to delve more into his operations and how it has been smooth sailing for Reflect Ghana, starting with his employees.

 “When it comes to employee compensation, most people immediately dive into the monetary aspect, but the subject goes beyond money, especially in the service industry. In the service industry, employees run the show. To be successful, you require the total concentration of employees when they are in the building. Managing people can be very dicey. I believe that to get the best out of your employees, it requires a couple of things;  reasonable salary, career development, good leadership and realistic & attainable organizational goals.“ Í will break it down;

  • Salary

When it comes to employees’ salaries in the service industry, managers need to consider employee expectations and measure against business performance. They must devise a salary structure that will bring a win-win situation, where both the business and employees are happy. The problem is,  the win-win situation is tough to come by. There are times where one has to sacrifice for the other looking at the bigger picture. In most cases, the managers are vision drivers, and their burning desire to achieve the organizational objective requires some calculated risks to be taken. From experience, I recommend a commission-based salary system as the best compensation method to grow the business. A commission-based system brings about strong teamwork towards the achievement of an organizational goal. Where business growth is at a slow pace, both parties suffer. Employees, at a point, will search for greener pastures. This thereby increases the rate of employee turnover. After these projections are made, the next option is to go for what I describe as a ‘salary floor.’ An arrangement where employee salary is not allowed to fall below a certain level even though they are on a commission-based payment system.

  • Career Development

I also think the development of employees’ careers plays a significant role in compensation. Employees should not feel static in their careers, and they must also grow with the business. There must be a considerable change in their skills. This can be achieved by continuously training employees on new trends and techniques.

  • Good Leadership

Where there is no proper leadership, there isn’t followership either. When employees believe in the driver of the vision, they are motivated to work towards achieving this vision.

“I will tell you something; every organization has operational standards that help employees carry out routine operations. In my case, I set these standards before the first day of work so my workers can familiarize themselves with them early. Nonetheless, it is one thing to establish operational standards and a completely different thing to ensure it runs. Maintaining operational standards is a continuous process that starts from the vision driver, me. Employees grow to fit in these standards, and constant practice makes these standards a part of them.“ Godwin pauses to reflect a bit and then continues, “From the early stages, I had to be around to maintain these standards, translating into actions all the words that were written on a sheet of paper. It does not happen like magic; someone has to be there to make these rules work. There is always the tendency of people not complying, but it becomes a success when someone is consistently available to ensure it works. “

On whether he thinks people are drawn to him more as a person or to the services of the business, he was swift to say,  “Different people have different reasons for patronizing a business. Managers are expected to keep a tally of these various reasons to evaluate business performance. For example, suppose most people patronize a business because of individual admiration. In that case, managers are to probe into the pros and cons of resting the business’s survival on the shoulders of an individual. This informs an effective strategy to secure the business’s survival if the individual is no longer available. “

“So yes, people were drawn more to me as an individual than to the business from the genesis with the reason that the business started with me as an individual. Fortunately, I am the vision driver of Reflect Ghana. This gives me the sole advantage of having direct contact with most of my clients so that I can address them appropriately in case of any grievances. Like I explained earlier, resting the whole business on the shoulders of one individual is dangerous even though it has some advantages. As the business keeps growing, my clients have come to expect specific standards. Hence, there is a need to tighten the system to work even when a particular individual is not around, and that is what I have been working towards over the past couple of months.“

We asked Degree Barber a hypothetical question based on a  business situation. Almost immediately, his face lights up with an answer, further displaying his knack for business and management. Supposing you have an extremely talented barber who has brought in about 50 customers. They are undoubtedly an asset. Now, he starts to feel big and struggles to take orders from you. What do you do?

“You know familiarity always breeds contempt. Given the unclear distinction between subordinate and boss in my organization, I believe it will be best to talk to the said employee in a very informal manner. I would take the person out for breakfast or lunch and let them know they are of great value to the organization. However, the organization has a hierarchy; no matter how blurred it may seem, that hierarchy needs to be respected, especially from the one calling the shots. They should do their best to respect their superiors and take orders from them. Make them understand that no one is bigger than the organization, and the organization will always come first on the scale of preference.“

“Further to that, organizations have a 3-tier approach to insubordination. These include; query, warning and dismissal. The lunch or breakfast date will be an example of an informal query in an organization like mine. The actions in the next tier will have to be undertaken should the breakfast date not yield desired results.“

When asked if he would use a time machine to correct any actions from the past, Degree Barber was rather emotional and said, “If I had a time machine, I would bring my brother back to life. I lost my elder brother on 29th October 2018. It was the saddest day on this planet. My brother was my motivation. He was the fuel that drove me to do more because he set a perfect example of hard work and perseverance. Until we meet again or have a time machine, I will always have him in my memory.“

On the ultimate goal of Reflect Ghana, Degree Barber, so full of positivity, said, “The ultimate goal is to become one of the best hair and grooming brands in Africa and own a cosmetology school that trains and preserves talents. As the saying goes “to conquer the world, you must first be known in your community”, we have become a household name in the community we operate in and are extending to neighbouring communities. We have also started training people in other areas to lay the blueprint for the fruition of our cosmetology school.“

Making music is one thing but managing an artiste and everything in his or her environment is a completely different ball game. For Selom Yao and Nana Kwame Afriyie, they have the privilege of managing the amazing Ghanaian Alte & Afro – Soul artiste Jay Cliff who is currently charting a path in a relatively new genre in Ghana and Africa.

Managing an asset in any business is challenging, and in the music business Selom will say “The job eh, e big.” And truly it is no small feat. It is never straight forward.

To celebrate the successful launch of their artiste’s new project, they shared some inspiring business lessons that tie in with their journey. As for their journey, we’ll need a movie studio to relive it.

Branding:

“In this business, there is really no line between your personal and work brand and both need to be very strong. We picked up lessons in being intentional about how people see us years ago from our friend, Chog, and it stuck with us. Today, that has transcended into rethinking every move and decision to determine its impact on us and our artiste.  In our business, a manager has to build a solid brand on his own to a point where he can get features or deals for his artiste. His artiste must feel comfortable to the point where his only focus is the music

A no shouldn’t always mean no, but restructure and push on.

Tenacity:

A no shouldn’t always mean no, but restructure and push on. We had to get a venue set up for Jay Cliff for a listening session for his EP (Twelve2Five). The venue we picked, the perfect venue for our brand and the music being put out- decided they were going on a break thus they were closing down. The manager flat out told us “No, we are closing, we have had a stressful holiday period.” We managed to get the owner’s number and spoke to him with confidence and he agreed to give us the venue but no staff or service. “It was God, 500 Ghana Cedis and Vibes.” We put together an amazing listening session that has stuck with people since and the impact on our artiste and the brand cannot be quantified.

Knowledge:

Soon, it became quite clear that our love for music and our drive was not enough to achieve all the goals, we needed knowledge.  An opportunity presented itself when Abdul Abdullah, founder of Afrochella, tweeted his desire to sponsor two Ghanaian talent managers to attend an online bootcamp run by Mr. Godwin Tom. Selom, sent in his CV and he got selected for the month-long course and all the knowledge acquired is in a book he carries around because he is constantly learning and adding up. The impact was too huge to ignore and thus when Mr. Godwin Tom set up a three-month long course, Nana Kwame’s mum invested in both of us and paid for us to attend the course. “We took it very seriously and soaked up every little detail.” “Immediately we were done, we sat down and looked back at our previous activities and applied the new knowledge to see where we fell short and we were amazed.” This new project, Red Wine Conversations, however is a byproduct of all the knowledge we picked up and of course the musical growth of Jay Cliff and the effect is noticeable. People are appreciating us more; new people are starting to notice.”

Tweet showing Godwin Tom’s Talent Management Online Bootcamp

Tweet showing Abdul Abdullah’s willingness to support Ghanaian Talent Managers

Planning:

Forecasting is never an easy task especially when you are dealing with music but it can be made simpler. “Maxwell Adjavon – iMullar taught us the importance of planning extensively in music and he is always there like a big brother.” Plan! Plan! Plan! even to the smallest of details, plan. Pre COVID-19, a two-year plan detailing how to get Jay Cliff in different markets and new crowds was drawn up and Selom dare say it is the greatest thing he has ever done. Although that plan could never materialize for obvious reasons, the attention to detail helped  structure an online market and crowd penetration and with the emergence of the app Clubhouse, there has been considerable growth with two sessions, one each with Ghanaian Music Lounge and Harmattan Rain.

Reinvent:

In the genesis of the journey, Jay Cliff got inspired by a beautiful genre, Alte & Afro – Soul, and he decided that that’s what he wants to do. At that point, the genre that he was singing and rapping in, trap music, was quickly gaining popularity in Ghana and is one of the biggest in the world. It did not make commercial sense to switch to something new when we had made considerable progress. But, making music goes deeper than numbers, it is spiritual on many levels so we quickly reinvented our tactics and operations to get the best out of this new path and to build the brand again. We never want to rest on our laurels but sometimes people do not even remember that we switched genres, we reinvented so seamlessly and the first genre people attach to our artiste’s name is Alte & Afro – Soul.

“…I never knew I could manage an artiste until my mum sowed the first seed…”

Focus on Strengths:

I have always loved music, was enrolled in a creative school when I was younger and my family has creatives in there” Selom continues, “but I never knew I could manage an artiste until my mum sowed the first seed after she saw me interview someone on 4SYTE TV. Her words, I will never forget “You kraa why don’t you find some artiste and manage, you’ll be good at it.” Nana Kwame’s story however isn’t so different, his father also introduced him to music ever since he was young and he took up acting and singing in high school, also an incredible journey but it was Selom’s subtle invitations to meetings concerning music in a bid to feel him out and get him unto his team. “He knows music thoroughly and he has this spark that cannot be hidden, I knew he could do the job from day one and that pushed me to work with him to achieve certain goals”

Strategic Associations

There’s a popular African proverb that says “follow who know road” and its importance in the Ghanaian music scene cannot be underscored. Quickly, we understood that, our goals today, were people’s goals yesterday, pacesetters, and they have waded through the waters already thus it is very important to pick up a lot from them so we do not get lost. A lot of influential people from artistes to managers to producers, deejays and curators teach us a lot and open plenty doors of opportunities because of the willingness to “follow who know road.”  IB Briggs, an amazing woman, has had a very important effect on our journey, still continues to have an impact. Her wealth of knowledge is immense and her artiste, Darkovibes’ rise in the scene is no luck but proper work being done.

Further Down The Road….

It has been quite a journey and the experiences are definitely amazing. The dream is to be successful beyond imagination – and that is a huge ask because we have big imaginations. For our country Ghana, we hope our efforts go a long way to grow the Ghanaian music scene into an industry. We do hope you draw inspiration and meaning in whatever field you find yourself in but in the meantime kindly listen to Jay Cliff whilst you relax.

The Healthy Life

Staying Fit Regardless of your Schedule – Part 1

Hi,

Hello,

Hey Hi,

I don’t know how macho men usually say hi, I am still getting used to my physique. I might have a bulky frame but deep down, I am still that little boy in that commercial who asked his on-screen dad how twenty-two people can chase one ball.

Life’s like that, I started staying fit as a way of dealing with some troubles in my life but soon enough, I realized the importance of having a healthy body and mind and it rewarded me with a more balanced life and all the stares when I wear that fitting t shirt.

I want to recount a conversation I had with a friend when the world was ‘normal,’ when we could still shake hands and give hugs.

Let’s call my friend Kofi. Kofi called me one day and was prattling about how stressful work was and how he wasn’t ‘seeing top;’. On top of that, he was rapidly gaining weight and he wasn’t his natural self. Upon instinct I told him, “Chale relax eh, the work e no be your popi ein own oo” *Take it easy at work, your dad doesn’t own the business* “No No Nana Kwame, this be National Service oo, I for impress make them employ me.”

Me of all people understood the importance of hard work. Considering I understood it a very young age. The motto of my senior high school is Vela Damus, loosely translating to “We Set Sail.” And in life, my boat has been through turbulent waters and there has been calm seas. If you are religious, the Jesus Christ that calmed my turbulent seas was staying fit mentally and physically. It made me understand the importance of my life and truly understand that no matter the situation I find myself, clear mind and healthy spirits are the weapons that will defeat every trouble.

I sat Kofi down and explained to him how important his mental and physical health is if he sought to reduce the stress from work. I let him clear his mind, a technique I learnt from yoga class and helped him compare his current performances when he is stressed to his performances when he is his natural self as he calls it.

He snapped out of our mini meditation session and looked at me apologetically, “I want to do it, I want to get back to my natural self, I want to be in control with sound mind and a healthy body.” “Help me.”

“Listen Kofi” I began, “This is not a quick fix!”  “This is lifestyle that you must adopt.” “No matter how tight your schedule is, there is always a way. “First, let’s see your schedule, we will work around it… “

Hi, my name is Nana Kwame and I am an advocate for a fit lifestyle. Being fit is a lifestyle that we cannot afford to not adopt. I plan to come back here frequently to have conversations with you about being fit and transforming our lifestyles. Stick and stay with me and I promise very educative and insightful sessions. Sometimes, I will tell stories from my life like I did in today’s chapter for us to understand that being fit is for any and everyone and the benefits are astounding. The Healthy Life

Staying Fit Regardless of your Schedule – Part 2

Hello again,

I received great feedback from the first part of this topic. Thank you all.

One thing that resonated with the feedback was the question about how much of a role the mind plays in getting the body to move. The power of the mind cannot be underscored and as I was thinking of how to bring this home, a trip I took over the weekend really showed me the way.

I went to Shai Hills with a family that has quite a busy schedule. They set aside Sunday afternoon right after church service and we took a little road trip to the hills. When we arrived, we chose the highest peak, an estimated thirty-minute climb.

Ten minutes into the climb, my companions decided they were tired and they were settling for the view somewhere close to the middle. Ah! The classic mental barrier we all experience. You see, this is how the mind works, especially with physical activity. There is a barrier in our minds that caps our physical abilities. It is the most painful at that moment and giving up seems the ultimate option but immediately you push it back, the activity you are partaking in becomes seemingly easier and you actually enjoy this ‘physical torture.’

1957ad-efw-nana-kwame

Ten minutes into the climb

We rested just a little bit and I encouraged the family to keep on going, there was a more rewarding view at the top and the climb would definitely be worth it. Immediately they all agreed to continue the ascent, no one complained again, there were a few grimaces but all minds were fixed on an ultimate goal, the view at the top.

When we got to the top, we entered a peaceful space. Personally, all my worries seem to have vanished and I gained clarity on a lot of issues that were on my mind at the beginning of the ascent. I looked around me and the family were so happy. You’d imagine that a group that were complaining ten minutes into the walk would have enjoyed the break but rather they moved about excitedly and barely rested. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold.

We started our descent and it was also very pleasant. It was definitely easier and even though our bodies had taken a little ‘whacking’ our minds were in a happy place and we were generally healthier.

Our drive back to the city was exciting and I smiled at the effort this family placed into staying fit regardless of the hustle and bustle of the city life. I have checked in on them this week and they are all having an amazing week.

30-minute climb equates to an amazing 7 days? Count me in for the rest of my life.

The Healthy Life

Workout for Fast-Paced Lifestyles

My people, how have we been these past few weeks? Eating healthy? Working out? Living a stress free and happy lifestyle?  Please tell me yes!

It is the fourth month of the year and some of us are recovering from the first quarter, analysing and probably resetting our goals for this next chapter of the year. A chunk of us also have exams and we know how those periods can get. All the best from me!

I am seeing a lot of us altering our lives to suit the fast-paced lifestyle that accompanies this period and usually, the first thing we sacrifice is our beautiful relationship with our workout routines… don’t worry, you are not alone, we are all guilty.

Today, I want us to look at a quick exercise that can keep us healthy and fit without taking up too much of our time.

In due time, I will upload videos of myself performing exercises on my YouTube channel.

 HIIT

“HIIT” is an abbreviation for High Intensity Interval Workout and I have a funny nickname for it ‘’quick-quick short-short” It can be performed by anyone and most importantly, anywhere. Gym, home, the great outdoors, the treadmill, I mean anywhere. All you need is a stopwatch to time yourself and the willpower to conquer ‘’quick-quick short-short”

These type of workouts helps burn calories faster. I’m going to teach you an easy but highly effective one. I dipped my hand deep into the HIIT workout bag AKA ‘’quick-quick short-short” bag and today, we will look at a workout that I call the 30-15 workout.

This is how it works; you sprint for 30 seconds then you slow down and walk briskly for 15 seconds then repeat. THAT IS IT.

Let me explain the science behind the 30-15. The 30 second sprint is meant to get the heart pumping and as we all know, sprinting is a good cardio workout but, we cannot sprint forever hence, our little 15 second ‘break’.’ This 15second break is a brisk walk and the aim is for us to rest while being active.

Performing this for 10 minutes every morning or evening is immensely beneficial and if possible, performing morning AND evening is perfect. This will strengthen our heart muscles and improve our stamina and cardio all the while, burning calories. If you feel up for a challenge, you can do it for 15 minutes. This is not one of those exercises where you will need a scale or a tape measure to measure your waist line to see or feel improvements. It is almost instant; you will feel good and you will notice the fat deposits around your body reducing within a week.

It is a new week, try the 30-15 and let me know how you feel and how difficult or easy you found it. Also, very important, because of the nature of the workout, forgetting to stretch before and after the workout might lead to muscle cramps so, please stretch adequately pre and post workout.

Next time I come here, we can look at more HIIT workouts and when my YouTube channel is fully up, I can show you some very important stretching techniques.

Have a wonderful week and enjoy the 30-15
