The Healthy Life

Staying Fit Regardless of your Schedule – Part 1

Hi,

Hello,

Hey Hi,

I don’t know how macho men usually say hi, I am still getting used to my physique. I might have a bulky frame but deep down, I am still that little boy in that commercial who asked his on-screen dad how twenty-two people can chase one ball.

Life’s like that, I started staying fit as a way of dealing with some troubles in my life but soon enough, I realized the importance of having a healthy body and mind and it rewarded me with a more balanced life and all the stares when I wear that fitting t shirt.

I want to recount a conversation I had with a friend when the world was ‘normal,’ when we could still shake hands and give hugs.

Let’s call my friend Kofi. Kofi called me one day and was prattling about how stressful work was and how he wasn’t ‘seeing top;’. On top of that, he was rapidly gaining weight and he wasn’t his natural self. Upon instinct I told him, “Chale relax eh, the work e no be your popi ein own oo” *Take it easy at work, your dad doesn’t own the business* “No No Nana Kwame, this be National Service oo, I for impress make them employ me.”

Me of all people understood the importance of hard work. Considering I understood it a very young age. The motto of my senior high school is Vela Damus, loosely translating to “We Set Sail.” And in life, my boat has been through turbulent waters and there has been calm seas. If you are religious, the Jesus Christ that calmed my turbulent seas was staying fit mentally and physically. It made me understand the importance of my life and truly understand that no matter the situation I find myself, clear mind and healthy spirits are the weapons that will defeat every trouble.

I sat Kofi down and explained to him how important his mental and physical health is if he sought to reduce the stress from work. I let him clear his mind, a technique I learnt from yoga class and helped him compare his current performances when he is stressed to his performances when he is his natural self as he calls it.

He snapped out of our mini meditation session and looked at me apologetically, “I want to do it, I want to get back to my natural self, I want to be in control with sound mind and a healthy body.” “Help me.”

“Listen Kofi” I began, “This is not a quick fix!”  “This is lifestyle that you must adopt.” “No matter how tight your schedule is, there is always a way. “First, let’s see your schedule, we will work around it… “
